Para esta exposición, como en sus primeras y celebres fotografías digitales iniciadas en 1991, tituladas Self-Hybridations Précolombiennes (Autohibridaciones precolombinas), ORLAN da continuidad a un proyecto en el que muestra su rostro hibridado con esculturas del pasado. Las obras de esta exposición fueron realizadas en el 2022, a partir de piezas prehispánicas de la cultura maya. Esta serie inédita viene a complementar su reflexión sobre las representaciones icónicas del pasado en la creación contemporánea.

ORLAN rompe los códigos narrativos preestablecidos del elogio de la belleza, reinterpretando su propia imagen. Utiliza la estética de culturas tradicionales en un juego de reflejos que se deforman hasta llegar a la simbiosis perfecta por medio de la imagen digital, una de las herramientas predilectas de la artista. Un trabajo que la artista perpetúa desde hace décadas a través de diversos rostros y colores, inspirándose de diversas culturas alrededor del mundo, así́ como de obras famosas de otros artistas, como la de Picasso.

En sus propias palabras, ORLAN da: “Una vuelta al mundo de los estándares de belleza (deformaciones craneales, estrabismo, narices postizas…). Con ayuda de la computadora, hibrido mi propia imagen con la de las esculturas que presentan estas características para crear otra propuesta, otro modelo de belleza”.

For this exhibition, as in her first and famous digital photographs in 1991 titled Self-Hybridations Précolombiennes (Pre-Columbian Self-hybridizations), ORLAN continues a project in which her face is hybridized with sculptures of the past.  The works of this exhibition were made in 2022, specifically from pre-Hispanic pieces of the Mayan culture. This unpublished series complements her reflection on the iconic representations of the past in a contemporary creation.

ORLAN breaks the pre-established narrative codes of praising beauty by reinterpreting her own image. She uses the aesthetics of traditional cultures in a game of reflections that are deformed until they reach the perfect symbiosis through digital imagery, one of the artist’s favorite tools.  It is a body of work that the artist has been perpetuating over decades, using a variety of faces and colors, finding inspiration in diverse cultures around the world, as well as in the famous works of other artists, such as Picasso.

In her own words, ORLAN offers this: “A tour of the world of beauty standards (cranial deformations, crossed eyes, false noses…). With the help of the computer, I hybridize my own image with that of the sculptures that present these characteristics, to create another proposal, another model of beauty”.
